Srila Prabhupada, the Founder Acarya of the International Society for Krishna consciousness (ISKCON) explains that Krishna consciousness is an art of changing our hearts by purification from the dust of material desires. We cannot stop our desires because as living entities, desiring is the component part of our constitution. 

Therefore we cannot give up our desires, but we can purify our desires. Killing of desire is no solution, but curing the desires, diseased condition of desire, is the right solution. As such, therefore, this dust of misunderstanding is cleared off. We can see our real position of life and make steady progress towards the ultimate goal of life. We have forgotten the ultimate goal of our life due to lack of Krishna consciousness. 

Therefore our entire activity should be executed in Krishna consciousness to revive our lost relationship with God, or Krishna.We do not prohibit anyone to cease from the present occupational duties, but we simply recommend that he executes such duties in Krishna consciousness. This is the process of bhakti yoga.

The natural position of the living entity is to be a servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This loving service is bhakti. Bhakti means activity – engaging the heart, mind and senses for Krishna’s pleasure. Activity here refers to activity of the soul and this is to freely express one’s spiritual emotions in loving exchanges with the Supreme Personality of Godhead and His servants. Only by accepting oneself as the servant of the Supreme Lord and acting in a way that reflects this surrender can we achieve true happiness.

Service to the Lord however is not ordinary. To access the privilege of devotional service one must sincerely chant the Lord’s Holy Name, the sublime and prescribed process for deliverance in this age as demonstrated by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

More than 500 years ago Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu taught us how to live a Krishna-centred life revolved around chanting of the holy names of the Lord.
